Plot summary[ edit ] Rudolf "Dolf" Wega is a fifteen-year-old who volunteers for an experiment with a time machine.

The experiment goes well, but accidentally Dolf is stranded in the 13th century. He saves the life of Leonardo Fibonacci da Pisa, without realizing who he is, and teaches him Arabic numerals. Together they join the German Children's Crusade , and through his modern-day knowledge, Rudolph manages to save a lot of children from horrible fates.

The second marker removing the story from reality is when Hannah and her fellow villagers are led into Auschwitz, and have their heads shorn. This is yet another cognitive demand on the reader though, as they are now dealing with a protagonist who magically lost her memory and became a different character.

The strain on accepting the setting as reality is deepened as Hannah enters the concentration camp. Empathy has become harder.

Although she is likeable, Hannah does not empathise with any character in her timeslip life. At first, she views the people around her as dreams.

Although she does not have negative wishes for them, her interactions with them are distanced and dreamlike. When they are in the concentration camp with her, Hannah still does not experience empathy. Her interactions there are based purely on survival and instinct.
