Choi Kang Chi (Lee Seung Ki) is the son of Gu Wol Ryung (Choi Jin Hyuk), 5 wins & 1 nomination. See more awards» .. Gu Family Book See more». When tragedy befalls his loved ones, Kang Chi leaves home and sets off on an emotional journey of growing pains as a half-human, half-gumiho. Drama: Gu Family Book / Kang Chi, the Beginning; Revised romanization: First script reading took place February 1, at MBC Dream Center in Ilsan, South Korea. Script reading covered the first four episodes of the drama series.

I watched it raw late last nite and was sold! The brother's hanging and the look on the maid's face, left me in tears! So far, I think the acting is good. Lee Yeon Hee has really nailed her character.

Her expressions are good enough for me to understand her anguish, see her conflict and pride. The others have also done such a good job that I can read their emotions even though I don't understand Korean! And the plot moves along fast and is interesting enough for me to understand what what is happening. This episode made me gush a bit. I like head Gisaeng Chun and Wol Ryung best so far.

A passionate loving powerful man who is a bit otherworldly. Yeah, i could fall for that. Looooooooooved little brother and maid as well. And there was the gentlest little hint of a pure little semi-romance love in blossom between bro and maid.

Sooooo sweet. Just sad that they died. Would've so loved maid and gumiho to fall in love instead of as usual aristocratic girl but this is par for the course.

When Seo Hwa was shamed by being stripped, I guess we were supposed to feel upset because a noble shouldn't be treated that way but generally i don't care how the heck nobles are treated and I generally am not going to feel sorry just because she is being treated like all the other poor pretty women are treated. Her aristocratic pride kinda left me cold but again, that's par for the course. Nevertheless, while i have a thing against us having to like Seo Hwa simply because she is a noble lady in distress, I'll play along.

I'm trusting I'll see something of a personality later. So far, she's painted with broad strokes: When Wol Ryung was discussing becoming a human, I wasn't sure if she could hear the conversation or not. Maybe as a noble she doesn't intrude on conversations she overhears. But her extreme silence was bothering me. I'm sure she'll develop more in the next episode. I bought his falling in love at first sight.

With men, pity can often lead to love. And although love at first sight does exist, she seemed just like a little victim falling in love with her rescuer.

This was amazing.. I never seen anything with Lee Yoon-Hee in it, but I had read countless articles of people critiquing her. I found her acting good. I completely felt everything she was going thru. I have a feeling tomorrow's episode is going to make me cry This first episode rocked my socks off too.

So much that I'm actually almost wishing for a full drama about mommy and daddy Gumiho. I've never seen Lee Yoen Hee in anything before, bit from reading previous comments I didn't expect much. But she was wonderful. The directing and camera work were beautiful to watch, and the story was told in a dramatic and entertaining way.

We didn't get introduced to the main characters but I have faith they will be as compelling as these characters from the past. I too want a longer mommy daddy story. I'm surprised considering this is our director's first hand at saeguk. I hope he keeps up the good work -- it's the first time he's parted from his duo team with kim eun sook. Cinematography was beautiful. I know!! I just want Seo Hwa and Wol Ryang to live happily in their mountain and raise adorable half-gumihos that grow up to be Sueng Gi.

I'd totally watch. Haha frankly, I love this couple and I don't mind seeing a longer story between the two of them. I also want more time with the parents.

It feels like there is a lot more that can be explored with these two than will be allowed for this series. Count me in as another one for team Mom and Dad, they look like they'd make a compelling full-length drama on their own, plus the chemistry is there.

Colour me surprised, now I wonder if this drama can work that same magic on Suzy. As it stands, 20 episodes of parental pain and ocnflict is something they could well get out of their story, I will be sad to see the end of it. Awesome that you posted a Nuts track - love them.

Where does everyone keep getting the idea that Daddy Gumiho lives and comes back later? Was it in a synopsis somewhere? I believe so. He has amnesia of course! Daddy will die in the end protecting his son or something I'm sure. It does make sense since KC will need someone to fight. A half gumiho beating up regular humans isn't going to work that well. Just finished watching the first episode! I absolutely loved it! The cinematography is beautiful.

But i'm a little iffy on the OST. I like it, but it feels weird. It was such a beautiful episode! I'm so here for Choi Jin Hyuk. Why the hell did it take this long for him to be in a sageuk?.

I hope he 'll stick around for a few more episodes. I watched it raw with lots of fast-forwarding as I really can't watch LYH. And what do you know, I got most of the story right even with all the ff I did.

I'll wait for Seung-gi and Suzy to appear before watching. Props for the fast subs though but sad that Lee Soon-shin's latest episodes haven't been subbed yet. I felt her emotions of pain, sadness, etc. Then again i had low expectations for her considering the critique about her meh acting.

I didn't expect much from her and I'm so glad she did well in this episode. She has been getting a lot of negative publicity lately so this is very good for her. I loved CJH - I've seen him in other stuff, but he really stood out in this role! The cast in episode one really went beyond my expectation and wasn't planning to fall in love with them. I hope I don't have the same issue with what happened with Moon Embracing the Sun for me - where the beginning storyline was much better than the latter half of the drama.

Nine's awesome If both are good then cable wins from now on and I'll be setting my expectations lower for dramas from the big 3. It is amazing, well paced, well written and well cast. If they can keep this level up, it'll will easlily become my favorite Kdrama so far. Seriously folks, watch Nine before the spoilers are all over the net.

Can't wait for the next episode! I was thinking the same! Lee Sung Jae in a villian role, that news for me. I might tune in to see him cause he seems to always play the good guy, heroic type of characters Rascal sons, Poseidon. I also want to tune in for Lee Yeon Hee. I didn't like her at all in East of Eden, but in Ghost she was okay. People are always saying her acting is wooden, so it must be a miracle that she at least makes an effort to "emote properly" as stated in another blog I read.

I also want to see Lee Seung Gi too, been a fan after King2hearts. Not sure how I feel about his hair in here, looks like a mess.

I don't really care for Suzy,. But then again the only drama that I watched her in was Big, so maybe I need to watch her in Dream High to become a fan. I can at least get properly invested in her character, though the one who really fascinates me is Soo-ryun, her whole life is basically a round of poker and I definitely think she'll be an ally to Seo-hwa when the time comes help her hide Kang-chi perhaps?

And I'm really hoping the parents don't die, they can go through awful things but let them have a happy reunion at the end please: So I guess I'm the only one who was bored watching this first ep. I don't really care about the backstory, we already know Seunggi's a half human, half gumiho. While I think that there were some problems with pacing, this was a strong opening episode. I am invested in the story of the parents, even though I know that it is just one small aspect of the larger story.

Let us hope that the leads present us with a compelling story of their own, as their performances and conflicts are supposed to carry the show! I am giving it a couple more episodes to see if I am totally drawn in. Of course, the 2 main leads haven't even appeared yet. Agree with you dear.. It was a good start still for the drama.. Well it's good to read the blog post thoroughly and completely first before trying to sound smart and being butthurt about the post.

Doesn't that sound stupid to you? My tone is unnecessary yet Micola's sarcastic, smartass tone is perfectly fine? It's as if she said, "Ha! Told you so!

Can't judge a show based on a poster! Not only that, but DB has been making fun of dramas regardless of whether they like the dramas or not, so you rabid fans just have to deal with it. It's a humour post, so move on and get over it. Rabid fans have been silent or were on the humour train when other dramas are being made fun of, but when it's Gu Family Book you guys just went bananas.

Talk about double standards. What has the use of the word "psychopath" got to do with comprehension of the post. And "butthurt" applies more to you I guess. I think you need to take your own advice! Please read carefully what I wrote. I was NOT commenting about your comment, but your language and tone! Even if others make a mistake, there's no need to use terms like 'psychopath' and 'buttheads'. It does not paint a good picture of you.

Moreover, I've read your other comments in other blogs too, and I find your language vulgar. There are more polite ways to express your opinion. Pls remember that this is a public site.

Gu Family Book

Do not jump to conclusions. Before you accuse and brand someone, pls get your facts right. If you have not read my previous comments, do not judge.

I agree that the villain is really villainy. I really didn't find myself longing or getting impatient for the future scenes because I was invested in this story. Here's hoping the show continues to be good. The End of the World is fantastic. War of the Flowers if you are a traditional saeguk lover. I KNO!!! Can I make a wish if dramabeans team can recap all of them?

I want to know your comment about God of the Workplace. Oh Wow Ep. I liked the brother and the maid, I feel bad for her. What a great start: Such a pretty episode!

For some reason my eyes always wander to the background every time I watch something, be it anime or drama. I find cinematography just as important as everything else. The preview for episode 2 has me curious. The looks she gave him though was pure disgust. Probably a cop out. The ratings may be higher once Lee Seung-gi appears.

This was so great. I'm gonna have to watch the episode. I loved every minute of this. The set up is great, but I'm impatient for things to get going, too. How many episodes will we have with the parents? Hopefully, not too many, because I want Lee Seung-gi on my screen, like, yesterday! Just kidding. But I do hope it goes quickly. Good opening. Very depressing though. Poor Dam. Thats one hell of a sacrifice. I would of stabbed him in the neck with a hairpin while he was busy being one of the worlds biggest POS.

He did all the most inhumane acts. Betrayal,Murder and Rape. Keep it up show.. I'm liking it so far. Am I the only one who wants a longer mommy daddy arc? Their love story is so gripping.

I was going into this drama eager about our puppy Seung Gi, but after this episode I just want more of the parents. Spin off maybe? A girl can dream. The winter dry spell seems to have ended!

Honestly, I like the parents but we all know how it begins and ends so I'm more excited to get to the part we don't already know.

This type of story is exciting though since they get together and avoid all the BS in 2 episodes that other couples have to deal with for 20 episodes to tell a story. Well, in terms of what we know, the OTP the non-parental ones are going to end up together at the finish anyway, this is not a melo where we have to guess about that stuff. And Mom and Dad's ultimate fate is actually more unknown in terms of drama tropes at this point does she die? He go evil?

Do they get to be together? I was like that, i dont even care about Seunggi - Suzy part now because this was soooooooooo good!

And i feel the kids part is gonna be super cheesy, and not so dramatic! I was thinking the exact same thing!

Didn't expect much from LYH but I would definitely like it if they stretched their arc by a few more eps. I saw the preview for the next ep Won't say much but I feel angry for what a saw! I wanted Dam to survive, become someone with a lot of influence and power, and become a fairy godmother to Kang Chi.

Episode 1 was great, but I wish Dam's fate didn't end up that way after saving her mistress. Would have liked the maid girl Dam to survive, the actress in her role is really good, too wasteful to be in only one episode. I bet revenge is gonna come in the way for Kang Chi's human turning quest, and this choice between them will be the core of this drama. Can't wait. Haven't seen the pilot episode yet but what caught my eye were the stills of Lee Da Wit. Meanwhile, Gwan-woong becomes intrigued by Kang-chi and his seemingly super-human strength.

In the meantime, Dam Yeo-wool Bae Suzy and Gon Sung Joon had been dispatched to the village by her father, now martial arts master Dam Pyeong-joon, to investigate a series of murders they suspect Gwan-woong is responsible for.

Yeo-wool witnesses the events that befall the Park family, and instinctively helps Kang-chi when he is hunted by Gwan-woong's soldiers. During a fight, a soldier slices off Kang-chi's beaded bracelet, which was used to contain his powers. Kang-chi transforms into a half-human-half-beast and easily defeats his enemies. So-jung later tells Kang-chi the truth about his origins, including the mystical and elusive Gu Family Book, which holds the secret to becoming fully human.

Kang-chi is taken under the wing of Yi Sun-sin Yoo Dong-geun , a naval commander. Yi Sun-sin, Master Dam, and the late Lord Park were part of a secret group protecting the Joseon nation against foreign invasion.

Yi places Kang-chi in the martial arts school run by Master Dam, and there he is trained physically and mentally and learns to control his transformations. After discovering that under the man clothes there's a girl, Kang-chi gradually falls in love with Yeo-wool, and vice versa. Jajajajaja That's exactly what I'm thinking, literally I'm in shock, I can't believe that was ended that way. Is frustrating not to know WTH happened with the book.

What just happened?! How and why did we end up to the modern times?! From the ending alone I would suspect there to be a season Thanks for the recap anyway! Thanks for the recap! Love the show very much. Just find it a pity that Yeo-Wool had to die. I was hoping they can do more about it when it comes to KC and YW meeting again.

Does the tree and the moon means history will repeat itself if they are together? Thank you, girlfriday, for all your hard work. Jang Ok-Jung last 2 episodes seems crappy too as what i've heard. Couldn't agree with you more! TK2H had a very satisfactory ending! Love the way JH and HA averted an international crisis in their usual 'play-hard-ball' way.

Even SK's death had a redemptive aspect, and the Princess, got on with her life. I agree with you. After the ending, the only positive thing I had to say was: K2H had more than just a good ending; that story had well-rounded, believable characters, a plot with a well-defined beginning, middle, and end, and a solid theme and point-of-view.

This mess had none of these things, and was also crippled with a young, one-dimensional girl but cute as a basketful of kittens! And improving! It seems he has considered it when he took as a leading male actor in GFB, as a leading male actor he has a big responsibility to make the drama awesome. He is drowning into this drama, seems far away from his true character, but he said he is not regret it. Hmm, despite its not really good ending.

I hate reincarnation endings because I feel inept writers use them to try to fix the unfixable. However, if they must use them, they should do something special. For this last episode, since they were reincarnating other characters too, they should have gone all out. They all become best buddies. We see on the television that the booty-shaking idol she likes is none other than Tae-seo. They call housekeeping and we see Jo Gwan-woong, coming with mop and bucket in hand.

Since he does such a bad job, his lady boss Chung-jo bullies him to tears. Gimme an alternate ending please, stupid writer!! I watched this coz of him and his delivery of a half Gumiho!!

Especially the one about Jo Gwan Woong. I was so disappointed that I thought if we are going to be ridiculous we better go all the way. To be honest my favorite ending would have included Wol-ryung and Seo-Hwa surviving, killing off baddie in ep 23, and then spending ep 24 with Wol-ryung and Kang chi exploring their quest for the Gu family book hence the title of the drama. Argh, what could have been Good alternative ending, esp about the baby gumihos, esp if they show us a glimpse of how that kinda happened Love your ending.

There will be a lot of fans of GFB who will made their own imagination of the finale. I can't drag myself to watch ep I promised I will watch ep 23 if YW live but the recap of ep 24 made me mad.

I will make my own GFB finale storyboard so I can forget the messy story of ep 24 After the blue light bring the flower back to life, SJ feels something weird, he meets Master Dam and asks him to keep YW's body. KC comes and meet their relatives again but he don't see Gon at that party. Kid said Gon is on the secret mission. Someone drops a glass and it slashes KC's hand. The blue lights heals it but 3 masters and SJ notice that there is still scar on his hand.

KC walk away in the wood when he hears voice screaming. A girl with veil tries to shoo away a fox. KC helps her just like he did with the little YW. KC's hand gets injure and the girl can't stop crying. KC confused cuz the blue light doesn't come. Suddenly, KC sees spider and screams but the girl cuts the spider's leg and only left 2 of it.

Her moves makes the veil drops. Gon comes but it's to late cuz KC calls the girl: Old KC and old YW walk in the wood. There is a gumiho with nine tails run to them and calls: Appa and she is Shin MIn Ah. That would be a great idea! Open thread to imagine the possibilities, what should have been, funny or not.

Maybe then we would be able to get rid of the awful taste the last few episodes left on us.

What an awesome alternate ending! LOVED your ending and epilogue! Love it! You broke my heart, Show. The first two episodes were totally epic while the last two were totally epic fails. Why, oh, why? Loved your ending as well! And that epilogue. You broke my heart, Show! Sorry about that. It said error so I re-submitted after reconstructing what I initially wrote.

Sorry again: My alternative ending: That's when Gon would come in and tell him, he needs his help with a national security thing! He looks at them and smiles Here's my alternate ending preface: Also these reincarnation ending are basically cheats:. YW dies. KC takes her remains or if you like her body and keeps it preserved -it's winter- like Mr. Freeze in that awful Batman movie back to the magical forest cave. KC goes through the human transformation thing to fulfill YW's wish for him to be human.

The side characters visit him and tell him to move on but he's holding vigil over her for a days essentially and all this unapologetic soapy stuff.

He turns human and he's looking for some sign of a miracle but it isn't happening. Some more sobbing happens and the everything in the forest begins to wither - pan to the flower in YW's room coming back to life. The spirit of KC's parents look on like Obi-wan. Blah blah blah. Maybe some Romeo and Juliet take where KC considers suicide for a sec this might not be the right message then more blah blah blah she wakes up. She's been dead for days so it fulfills the prophecy part enough.

Some sappy dialogue. They head off back to her dad's place and they notice the dying forest. In a span of 10 minutes the writer made me hate that I watched all 24 episodes. I always hate the glaring contest endings. Why is that such a popular thing in many finales? Do that many people like it?

I felt everything that happened in 24 pretty much negated what KC was fighting for. I still can't believe this is how this series ended. After reading about the finale, I realized that I didn't want to bother even watching it.

I didn't like the reincarnation ending in RTP and from what I've read, I would absolutely hate this one. Such a cop out. I've never only read the recaps for a kdrama and not watched it, but if ever there was one to do that for, this was it. I wish I could say I cared, but frankly I don't. I have no interest in any character except Daddy Gu, which is a shame because I actually quite enjoyed the romance at the start.

Like come on, guy loses girl kikyo guy lives for a while longer, then guy meets new girl kagome There were a LOT of elements similar to, if not ripped from Inuyasha in my opinion. The whole "gumiho blood can save each person only once" is a direct match for the "Tenseiga can only revive each person one time" rule.

Obviously, the whole half-demon trying to become human quest for the human woman they love. Probably a lot more examples if I felt like taking the time to break down both series and comparing plot points.

And yes, I agree that Inuyasha was a lot better as a whole in its execution of the similar premise between the two shows. This was just so lame, on so many levels. Writer fail. I stopped at ep. XD Would only be a waste of hard drive space. The only complete story in this series is love story between seo hwa and wol ryung But the final episode just give me this whole WTH frown and frustration.

Kangchi, the Beginning

Totally unsatisfying. If they made everybody came alive again, why there is no WR-SH? It's feel a bit unfair for their story to just end up at those cold, gloomy?

Just get wol ryung to heal her'' is what I was thinking when she was dying. They had me again when they showed the future although it could have been more exciting.

And the epilogue was simply puzzling. Please let there be another season to this show in which they show kang chi's search for the gu family book. Pretty please!

Me too! I was like "wol-ryung better awaken from his eternal rest with a dead woman and save his daughter-in-law to be". Btw, years later, what if the clear the forest around moonlight garden. Wont that force Wol-ryung to wake up from his sleep?

I kept screaming at the screen for that to happen! Wol Ryung could've saved her and somehow Kang chi could've saved his mom and then they both could've found the book and lived as a happy family. Or somehow turned their girls into divine creatures and lived happily ever after I know this was too much to dream of but for goodness sake, they made me fall in love with a gumiho baby!

I wanted a conclusive and complete happy ending! What if modern day YW already have a boyfriend? How can we take for granted that she will fall in love with Kang-chi? All good questions, all valid!! To assume that she will be ready and waiting to fall in love with him is just so EVEN if the soul is the 'same' the memories won't be, so she is still not really Yeol wool, who went through thick and thin with him, loved him for who he is Thank you dear javabeans and girl friday for sticking out with the last 2 lacklustre ending episodes, and I really enjoyed reading the recaps over watching the drama sometimes.

There probably will be a Season She may have a crush on someone else, but because of the crescent moon and peach blossom tree, they are fated till all eternity!!!! For real Gu Family Book Favorite. Ivoire June 25, at 8: Oh well.
