The authors are remarkably successful in defining an efficient sequence of decisions within each topic area, covering most of neuro-ophthalmology.

Students, especially, will appreciate the dissection of the deductive process. But more importantly, the authors understand the difficulty with decision trees -one wrong turn and you are lost. Sometimes the wrong turn results from incorrect data, but at other times it results from an "atypical" disease presentation.

So it is delightful to find cogent text describing the diseases and their underlying pathophysiology, so that the errant diagnostician can find his way again. In three topic areas, the authors are honest enough to admit that decision trees are not particularly useful, so material is presented in a more conventional textbook format.

A bonus awaits the reader who expects this book to deal exclusively with diagnosis. Management recommendations for many major diagnoses are included, reflecting the mainstream of current neuro-ophthalmologic opinion.

Illustrations are generous and relevant. This extraordinary atlas consists of 1, illustrations 1, in color , organized by tissue for example, diseases of the eyelids, diseases of the lens and specific disease. Each disease entity has a brief narrative summary and clinical photographs, supplemented by illustrations of histopathologic specimens, radiologic studies, ultrasonographic findings, and fluorescein angiograms.

Taken as a whole, the color reproductions of the clinical photographs and histopathologic specimens are of very high quality. This gives the book a homogenous style and makes it enjoyable to read. Lang and his colleagues are acknowledged leaders in their fields and together, bring clarity that comes only from specialists actively engaged in ophthalmology. Textbooks need to keep facts clear and accessible, while avoiding oversimplification. Lang and colleagues have found the right balance.

While reading through this book, I found some topics outstandingly well presented. Most of the illustrations more than and the tables more than 30 are excellent, as are the chapters that overview infectious conjunctivitis with symptoms, pathogens and treatment , cataract and glaucoma treatments and the chapter about electrophysiology.
