This is a fantastic book!

KIRKUS REVIEW

I scooped up the book when I ran across it at site. Raab presents a detailed history of the Mafia and its bosses, capos, made-men, associates, buttons, and wannabes. Highly recommend it. I was interested in reading this book because a few names caught my eye. In the '80's I worked as a downloader for a local department store and went to New York every month to download merchandise for my departments.

I didn't realize it at the time but I inadvertently did business with mob- owned garment manufacturers. There was no pressure on me to do a certain amount of business with these companies, however several of my colleagues were forced to do business with certain companies- to the extent that they were told what and how much to download. The manufacturers even went so far as to write the download orders!

We also DID have to use a specific trucking company. I now know why! This book seemed well-researched, and is very interesting to follow the families from their earliest beginnings to the 's; who started the families and who's in charge today.

I gave it 4 stars because I would've like to have seen photos of the people named in the book. The Kindle version didn't contain any. Overall quite good book. Has some details that are irrelevant and does not provide details where needed.

Jun 07, Trey Malone rated it really liked it. This overlong read describes in vivid detail the struggle between the Italian mafia and the FBI. Outside of what I've seen in film over the years, I knew very little about how these shadow organizations made their money, and I am very grateful to this book for describing the economics of mob activity. I learned more than I ever needed to know about organized crime in New York City, but the title of the book is something of a misnomer.

Much of the discussion focused on how the government sought This overlong read describes in vivid detail the struggle between the Italian mafia and the FBI.

Much of the discussion focused on how the government sought to bring down the crime bosses, and not enough of the book described AMERICA'S mafia empires.

All in all, I'm glad I read this book, but believe that a solid pages could have been cut. I read this over about seven months, mostly while waiting for clients at jail or between Court hearings. Sometimes that can effect how I view a book.

In this case I don't think it did. That was the birth and early days of La Cosa Nostra. I recognize that Raab was covering everything and so he wasn't going to stop at the Apalachin Meeting or Valachi. It was a good read overall.

But at times it felt like Italian alphabet soup. And I just think that maybe it was too much to try to shove into one book. Nov 24, Casey rated it it was ok.

This book is full of amazing details about the primary members of the Mafia families. It definitely reads more like a documentary, mainly just stating the facts, rather than a story. It is interesting to find out what has been discovered about many unsolved cases now that time has passed. I really enjoyed the family trees at the end of the book that lists out the power players in each family from the beginning to today.

Pretty dry, but definitely a deep dive into the history of the Mafia. Jul 15, Rob rated it liked it. There was a lot of interesting stuff in this book around how American organized crime started, operated, and was combatted, but it eventually got really really repetitive: This person was turned, and did this in return for this.

The beginning was definitely worth reading for a look at how much more expensive crime has made things, and to remove the romance that was around the mob thanks to media. Worth a read, but perhaps not a finish, unless you really love the details. Good book could give more details Overall quite good book. Has some details that are irrelevant and does not provide details where needed.

Most of the information and history the author writes are already in documentaries that one can watch in YouTube. Overall though good book and I would recommend it. Mar 24, Rebecca rated it liked it. This very long book contains some amazing and very well researched information.

Honestly, it is so much info, bouncing back and forth between years, nicknames, bosses, hits, similar names etc I just could not keep it all straight. Perhaps some other reading of more direct incidents and history would be appropriate before delving into this long book. I found the first half fascinating, giving a broad by sufficiently detailed history of organised crime in the USA.

Excellent details but you need a program to keep track of everyone. Mad Would have been 4 or 5 stars but I needed a program or something to keep track of everyone. I do wish though, that I had a book like this in when I wrote a college paper on Organized Crime. Will definitely have to revisit this book a couple more times.

Apr 22, Nicholas Maulucci rated it really liked it. This is the most thorough mafia book I've ever read. Very comprehensive, yet enjoyable and interesting most of the way through even though it is more than pages.

The chapters are short and informative. This is a must read for anyone interested in the American mafia of the 30's through the 's in New York City. It details the five families of New York City.

Excellent book. Apr 02, DAER rated it liked it. Very ambitious subject. I am sure Raab has done years of research. The details are very entertaining. However, this is such a grandiose subject, with all the foreign names, people come in and out, get killed, it is very difficult to follow and at times confusing.

I finally finished it on a second attempt. Great Mafia history The author did a wonderful job researching the information for this book.

It is well written and is a great display of events from the beginning of CN to current times. I would definitely recommend anyone interested in the history of Cosa Nostra.

Aug 20, Mafia Fan rated it it was amazing. This book is literally the best book about the Mafia.

Its literally everything u want to know about the Mafia also goes into great detail about how the fbi caught up with the Mafia and how they bugged there social clubs etc. The racketeering detail is the best. This book is my favourite book ever. Jul 05, Kelly rated it it was amazing. Good job of assimilating and presenting loads of details on the Mafia. There seems to be more information about the 's and 's than earlier periods, and more information on the law enforcement efforts than I expected.

These are not criticisms, as the book was interesting throughout. Please correct page count 1 14 Jun 06, Readers also enjoyed. About Selwyn Raab. Selwyn Raab. Books by Selwyn Raab. Trivia About Five Families: Quotes from Five Families: Welcome back.

Facing the death penalty, Massino becomes a federal witness, testifying against 60 fellow mobsters, so capos Anthony "Tony Green" Urso and Michael "Mikey Nose" Mancuso, both of whom are themselves jailed, control the family briefly. Selwyn Raab was there, in the streets, the precinct houses, and the courtrooms to record that story.

He detailed the history of the New York mafia and chronicled the unrelenting attacks by the FBI and federal prosecutors that left them staggered but made sure to also devote the last 20 pages to the likelihood of a resurgence.
